Inspiring young people

In what is believed to be a unique WWI history project, Newington Primary School holds a service commemorating the 100th anniversary of the death of each of the village's Fallen, using information researched and provided by Newington History Group.

NHG members always attend, sometimes even accompanied by descendants they have traced. Those services are especially moving as many families have been previously unaware of the sacrifice made by their ancestor.

Emphasis is placed on where and how the soldier would have lived in Newington, bringing history alive for the pupils. They particularly enjoy being able to identify homes, many of which are still standing and virtually unchanged.

Children from the school will be at Newington History Group's Battle's Over commemoration on November 11 to perform and to exhibit work they have completed in memory of the villagers who served.

Although commemorations for the centenary of WWI are coming to an end, we can offer advice and suggested research protocols to anyone who would like to introduce a similar project into their local school; perhaps to commemorate the 80th anniversary of WWII from next year.
